A Mod Tea Party!

I haven’t lost my mind for good this time, I promise. I have just found myself smitten with the most unlikely shade of nail polish from the latest OPI nail polish collection. Mod Hatter is absolutely lovely. Who would have thought a quaint shade of violet-y taupe would have captured my attention? I surely didn’t. (admittedly, my mind did at first fill with thoughts of beloved great auntie Agatha) Mod Hatter is one of the gorgy 6 new colours in OPI’s Garden Party SoftShades Collection. Any one of the scrumptious colours in this very elegant and modish collection is certain to be the perfect delicate accompaniment for an afternoon tea or any other romantic event. The coquettishly feminine, ultra flirty All Stars of this collection are:

Harts and Tarts- a beautiful blushing pink.
No Bees Please- a buzzy beige-pink.
Just Tea-sing!- a flirtatious shade of shimmering pink.
Funny Bunny- the cutest soft pink.
Mod Hatter- a trendy shade of violet-taupe.
I’ll Take The Cake!- an irresistible pale sugar rose.

Garden Party SoftShades by OPI are available from leading beauty salons from May 1st and from all David Jones from August 1st 2007.

Cuticle Woes Be Gone!

Dry cuticles, hangnails, and lackluster nails are the bane of most hands in winter. Nails that are a little or a lot worse for wear are generally a result of a lack of hydrating moisture due to the onset of chillier weather. Hands that also spend a fair bit of time in and out of water, without a proper bit of moisturizer applied to them in between, can particularly fall prey to dry cuticles and hangnails. Ouch! Talk about sore, unsightly little terrors.

Creative Nail Design SolarBalm is a nourishing pot of moisturizing goodness. SolarBalm is a highly emollient conditioning balm made specifically for nails and skin, which comprises of a blend of jojoba oil, vitamin E, and sweet almond oil. Just the tiniest amount of SolarBalm rubbed onto the nail, cuticle and surrounding skin will instantly hydrate. After a few days of regular use, you will certainly see and feel the difference in your nails and cuticles. Do resist the temptation to bite off or pull at any bits of dry cuticle or skin that are annoying you. Often this will cause them to tear further, to be even more painful, and become a potential source of infection. Use a quality pair of cuticle nips to remove the desiccated cuticle and hangnail only. Tweezerman Stainless 2000 Cuticle Nipper is Beauty Marked!’s tool of choice. This stainless steel, double spring cuticle nip is fantastic for removing that nuisance bit of dry cuticle or hangnail that’s not only unsightly, but catches on what seems like absolutely everything! Talk about adding insult to injury. Ugh! But not to worry, because before long, with regular maintenance, dry cuticles, hangnails, and brittle nails won’t be an issue for you… Right?

Creative Nail Design’s SolarBalm comes in a handy 9 gram tin that fits wonderfully in your handbag, pocket or wherever you store all things precious. Visit Creative Nail Place for your local stockist. Tweezerman Cuticle Nippers supplier info is gladly available from Dateline City.

Top Coat. Base Coat. What’s the point?

The point of top and base coats when polishing your nails, is that they not only protect your nails from the varnish you are using, but also help to extend the life of your nail polish. Base and top coats are always required when properly polishing your nails. They are just as necessary as the two coats of colour you paint on. Many companies have built on the basic requirements and uses of base and top coats, that some now clam to dry quicker, entice rapid nail growth, whiten, harden, to be chemical free, and can support MP3s, to boot! But seriously, the most basic essentials of these two requisite coats are:

Base Coat - to smooth the nail surface and to add a colourless protective varnish layer to protect your nail from the colour pigments in nail polishes that can stain (particularly your reds, fuchsias, and darks).

Top Coat - to add shine to your nail polish and to seal in the layers forming a tougher, fade and chip resistant polish.

Beyond that, it’s just a matter of what added optional extras you fancy in a base and top coat.

United We Stand…

Especially when it comes to wearing nail polish on both the fingers and the toes. Although it’s only classed a misdemeanor to wear different coloured polish on our hands and feet at the same time, it’s a beauty offense nonetheless (punishable by 50 lashes with a thread of silk when last we checked). Your overall look is so much more “well put together” when your immaculately applied (of course) nail polish stands in unison to be present and accounted for. So, what happens when you “must” wear those gloriously strappy sandals or peep toe shoes and you know good and darn well that the jig will be up if you go baring both your fingers and your toes? Just remove the polish from either one or the other and reapply the matching colour to the offending limb or remove the polish from your fingers, do a quick shape, buff, and moisturize and away you go. Unpolished toes are often only rocked with polished fingers as a last resort by the way. Needless to say, if the polish is a little worse for wear, lose it. Better to wear nothing and buff than wear mismatched polish or any polish, for that matter, that’s past it’s prime.

It almost goes without saying, that keeping a bottle of nail polish remover on standby is a must. Consider it a beauty staple. What happens when those rare occasions arise when you find yourself caught out without a single drip of remover? Yes, it has been known to happen to the best of us. Simply apply a thick coat of clear polish on top of the polish you want to remove and quickly and firmly wipe it straight off. This aught to remove the polish in a pinch. Keep this little trick up your sleeve for such times when it just may come in handy.

Only because I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to skite about my new favourite polish colours of the minute, have a look at Creative Nail Design’s latest offering: The Look Colour Collection. Utterly gorgeous!

The Dark Side of Beauty.

I suspect all the real Emos and Goths out there are really dirty on all of “us” who are really diggin’ our foray into the dark side of beauty. Dark nails are all the trend at the moment. Yes, yes, I can hear all of you who have been rocking the black nail polish since, well, forever, cringing. But, you’ve got to give the rest of us a fair go. Dark nail polish on short, squared off nails that’s immaculately applied is the Shiz! Love it! I can’t help myself from craving nails dipped in Couverture, boysenberries, the shimmeriest of dark blues (I’m thinking sexy car ducco blue), or black plums to name just a few. EnGs (Emos and Goths), just to make you feel a little less ripped off, what if those of us venturing into the underworld of beauty promise not to wear chipped dark polish or darks on long nails? We’ll leave that particular style to you, the Pros. Deal?
